For Vit D, kidneys are necessary to turn it into usable compound (alpha-calcidol). I don’t know if same is true about vit A. Maybe your doctor advised usable vit D.
Vitamin A is found in two forms - Retinol (preformed Vitamin A) or Retinoids (beta-carotene). Beta carotene is the precursor of vit A. In one way vit A can be the usable form as beta carotene will need to be converted to vit A for use.
Hope it helps.
Good luck!
